Since the purchase of our little friends, Blossom, Pepper, and Sunshine (still not sure of that name, I'm waiting until she's bigger), I've had several people ask me, "So, why do you have chickens?" After first I was in shock. The answer seemed so logically I couldn't believe I had to explain myself. The only response that came to my head was "well, why not?" I mean who wouldn't want chickens.
After some contemplation I've remembered why we have chickens: the eggs (another "fun" chore for the kids to do every morning), they eat bugs, even scorpions, which we don't have, but, still a perk, and the fertilizer is wonderful;I never knew I could get so excited about compost and chicken manure.

And personally the best thing about having chickens is because of Chrissie. She used to be terrified of them. Anytime we went to a farm she didn't want anything to do with the little buggers. Even the first day we had them she didn't want to touch the chicks. But sense then...

When we first visited Oklahoma after living in California for 3 years, my youngest sister was only 4 and didn't remember Oklahoma at all. So when she saw where eggs came from she wouldn't eat them. Mom was beyond consoling....that a daughter of hers would be so "uppity" about farm life. She didn't quite know how to handle it... except to be embarrassed. I think it was the shock of a child of hers losing a sense of heritage that was a part of HER family (as far back as she could remember). As an 11 yr old I thought it was kind of funny. And I didn't mind losing farm life heritage at all. It was hard work! SOOOOOO, Mom would be very proud of Chrissie. I think you should name your next chick "Mable" after Mom :)
P.S. Get a Rhode Island Red.... that was her favorite :) :) :)
What a fun entry! I have never thought about having chickens either--just that of course you would want them if you could. So proud of Chrissie!!(My computer all of a sudden decided to let me back on your blog--go figure}
love it! And while you're at it, why not a few guinea? (perhaps because they're ugly and loud...?) I'm jealous of your little black and white speckled chick. She's darling.
