5th Year

Ah, another year of residency finished...only three more to go.
The past four years of residency have flown by and for the most part I'm not that eager for it to be over; the things that are hard about residency will always be hard-more specifically the unpredictability aspect of Rick's career. I never know when Rick will be home. And I won't allow to give me an estimated time because he's always wrong (he's usually errors more on the hopeful side) and if he does give me an e.t.a. I usually add an hour. However, these years will be our happiest times: our kids are young and full of love, life is simple, and Rick loves where he works.
However, with that said, to me, residency is like being pregnant.
When I'm pregnant I feel like I'll always be pregnant: I feel like we'll always be in residency (it is a seven year residency-the longest one), I can't imagine life otherwise.
When I'm pregnant, I'm always exhausted: Rick is never home, so, I'm exhausted.
When I'm pregnant, I forget what it feels like to bend down and touch my toes, roll over in bed without waking up, and run ( and I mean run): since residency I've forgotten what it feels like to go in a grocery store and, for instance, buy a particular lettuce because I want it and not because it's the one on sale.
Lastly, pregnancy is a very special time: residency is a very unique time where we've grown and learned together as a family.

summer time

I have a friend who claims to love the summertime in Phoenix. I'm still convinced she's pulling my leg, however, to her credit once summer is over I miss the pool. The heat does force us to spend lots of time in the water. Subsequently, the kids are becoming great swimmers.

Chrissie is becoming more adventurous: swimming in the deep end, diving down to touch the bottom of the pool, and swimming longer distances. In addition, she feels free and confident.

Matthew has no fear and for awhile would just jump in the water and float there until one of us would push him back to the steps. However, he's now adapted more to the pool and has started doing his own version of the "butterfly": he's all upper body with the butterfly motion and doesn't even kick his feet, but, somehow manages to swim nonetheless.

Both kids love being "dolphins," which consists of diving in and out of the water (Matthew usually on my back); Chrissie came up with idea after watching a documentary on the ocean. And both kids thoroughly enjoy the pool, which makes these hot summers quite enjoyable (the incredible sunsets certainly help as well).

4th of July

Waiting for the fireworks.
The first firework scared Matthew (I've never seen him so terrified/shocked), however, he quickly got over it. Chrissie asked lots of questions: why is there smoke? And Matthew kept saying: "pireworks...its bery loud."

Flag cake.
Chrissie helped me make this cake. She decorated it all by herself and asked lots of questions about stripes/stars, colors, etc. Making this cake ended up being a great way to teach Chrissie about the American flag.

Chrissie in her "america day" outfit. Yes. My daughter was wearing long sleeves in a 100+ degree weather. Supposedly, she liked the shirt because it added blue-the exact color she was looking for to complete the ensemble.
