All on our way to meet Rick in Salzburg. Grandma KLynn or "O-Ma,"as Jane preferred to call her, came down with us-bless her.
Rick gave three talks last week at a neurosurgery conference that was directed by Cornell University and sponsored by the American Austrian Foundation. We stayed at Schloss (castle) Arenberg, which used to be a private residence/chateau and had since been bought by the foundation and solely used for educational purposes. It is not allowed to be used as a hotel. They paid for our rooms, food, and travel expenses. Not to mention, they were extremely accomodating to our children, they gave us a charming two bedroom suite with plenty of beds for the whole family. No one slept on the floor or couch.
That night Rick and I had dinner with the other faculty members at a patron's home, an Austrian couple who had donated to the American Austrian Foundation. The hostess was charming and reminded me of Emma Thompson. I think there is nothing more enriching in learning about a culture than going to a locals home and eating a delicious home cooked meal. In addition, the home was built in the 1620s, which certainly created a wonderful atmosphere and allowed us a glimpse into the real Salzburg.
