summer time

I have a friend who claims to love the summertime in Phoenix. I'm still convinced she's pulling my leg, however, to her credit once summer is over I miss the pool. The heat does force us to spend lots of time in the water. Subsequently, the kids are becoming great swimmers.

Chrissie is becoming more adventurous: swimming in the deep end, diving down to touch the bottom of the pool, and swimming longer distances. In addition, she feels free and confident.

Matthew has no fear and for awhile would just jump in the water and float there until one of us would push him back to the steps. However, he's now adapted more to the pool and has started doing his own version of the "butterfly": he's all upper body with the butterfly motion and doesn't even kick his feet, but, somehow manages to swim nonetheless.

Both kids love being "dolphins," which consists of diving in and out of the water (Matthew usually on my back); Chrissie came up with idea after watching a documentary on the ocean. And both kids thoroughly enjoy the pool, which makes these hot summers quite enjoyable (the incredible sunsets certainly help as well).

Thanks for keeping Beb and I updated on your cute little family. I had so much fun swimming with them when I was there--maybe again in October when we are there!!

Way to go Chrissie and Matthew! And way to go Mom for being the dolphin. It looks like you are having fun and the kiddos are as cute as ever.

Chrissie and her pink goggles....precious. Matthew and his "go get 'em" attitude..... precocious. And here is the little birthday message I left on our family website:

Some memories with my dear Vanessa:

Loved how you put your chin on your hand, supported by bended elbow on the sofa where you were lying on your tummy...... you were just "days" old....so cute.

Love how your eyes get big when you are emotional (happy, sad, surprised, trying to hide something, etc.)

Love how you cuddled up to me when you were little and I was overweight "I don't like my Moms too skinny. I like them just like you." (possibly my favorite memory)

Love how you used to ride the little "cozy coup" .... like the Flintstones.... with your little feet moving swiftly on the ground and leaning from side to side..... I can still see you :)

Love how you changed clothes ALL DAY LONG because.....I'm not sure why but you found it entertaining.

Loved your lttle "arrow buns" (when you were about 4 yrs or younger)..... I've never seen a bum take the shape of an arrow when the person bent over.... but yours did and I can still see that cute little shape.

Love how you wouldn't let me go in the car by myself if you were around. I remember you being in bed and heard me start the car and came running down to tell me you were coming with me because you didn't want me to go by myself..... aaaaaw.

Love how you ALWAYS held my hand when I was driving and you were in the front passenger's seat (I think until you were in high school..... for sure all throughout grammar school)..... hope you have a daughter like that.

Love how (even when you were in college) you would hug me and thank me for the smallest things. I remember you doing that on the streets of NYC.

Love you for the Mother and wife you've become. Have a Happy Birthday!!! Love you, love you, love you.

Mom
